An electric car is an automobile completely run by an electric motor, as
compared to cars that run on gasoline. The electric motor gets energy from a controller, which
regulates the amount of power created by accelerating. EV’s are one of the most
efficient ways to go around a city without causing much harm to the
environment. Companies such as Tesla and Toyota are doing very well in
producing and selling these cars in places such as the United States, as demand
there is quite high.

India is now still a
developing country which means, some of the technology that the Americans or
Europeans have, the Indian’s might not. This results in Indians lagging
behind in the global economy “competition”. Minister of State for Power and
Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal said “the centre is preparing a road map to ensure
that only electric vehicles will be produced and sold in the country by 2030.” He
also said, this will be an “end-to-end solution to address the issues of climate change.”

India’s 90% of power
produced comes from using coal-fire, the other 10% includes some renewable
sources and some unrenewable ones. The MD of Mahindra & Mahindra, Mr. Pawan
Goenka believes that using EV’s in India will help in reducing 30-40% of carbon
dioxide production reducing the carbon footprint substantially. The change from petrol and
diesel fuelled vehicles to electric powered vehicles will reduce India’s necessity
on oil and the cost of import. It will strengthen the rupee and the current
account deficit would disappear and of course, the air will be cleaner.

The Modi Government
reckons that the automobile sector’s massive conversion will cut its oil bill
by some $60 billion, reduce emissions by 37%, and curb the burgeoning demand
for road infrastructure over the next 13 years. Sometime recently, the Indian
road transport minster made the government’s intentions clear by saying that, “We
should move towards alternative fuel…I am going to do this, whether you like it
or not, and I am not going to
ask you. I will bulldoze it.”
