Gun Control is defined as a set of laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms by civilians. The topic is relevant in our society, and country because Guns are the cause of much of the violent crime in the United States and need to be changed. Stricter gun control laws and licensing are necessary to save lives. Gun control can decrease crimes committed by firearms. If guns are regulated, then we will have less access to firearms decreasing killings and mass shootings. The Second Amendment is not an unlimited right to own guns.
It is reported that Gun violence in America kills more than 30,000 and injures almost 70,000 each year. This is evidence that this is a growing problem and issue in our society. The United States has the highest per capita and total number of guns in the world. Though the second amendment allows citizens to carry and bare firearms. We need better, stricter laws, and regulations that are going to prevent firearms from coming into the wrong hands, and subsequently being used in crimes. The U.S. doesn’t require that a background check is run every time a gun is sold, this allows the sale of deadly assault weapons holding to be sold to dangerous individuals, including criminals.
In the United States, gun shows are temporary markets for guns and ammunition. Unlike gun stores, private-party sellers are not required to perform background checks on buyers at gun shows. They also are not required to record the sale or ask for identification. This is known as the “Gun Show Loophole”. The gun show loophole makes it easy for guns to fall into the hands of the wrong individuals, including criminals. Gun shows that are not running background checks on its customers makes it an easy access for criminals, and violent individuals to get ahold of firearms without having to worry about restrictions or background checks.
Mass shootings in the United States have sadly become a trend that seems to be on the rise and occurring more and more at a rapid pace. Shootings in public places, schools, shopping centers, and even movie theaters are homes to mass shootings, which is seeming like the new normal now a day. Pulse Orlando nightclub in Orlando Florida, Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, are just a few of the mass shootings that have occurred in just the past 10 years alone. The Vast majority of guns used in 18 of the recent mass shootings were bought legally and with a federal background check. At least nine gunmen had criminal histories or documented mental health problems that did not prevent them from obtaining their weapons. This is a call for stricter gun laws and tighter background checks.
Gun control remains and will remain an issue in our society because there continue to be issues surrounding gun violence. Guns continue to impact our culture and are becoming a concern for people to step out of there homes without having to worry about if their malls, schools, or workplace will be the next victim to another senseless shooting.
