In this report, I will explore the right to free and equal. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.(Universal Declaration UN) It is important because these rights are there for your protection against people who might want to harm or hurt you. They are also there to help us get along with each other and live in peace. Human rights are not always respected in today’s world, this is even worse in some country for example in North Korea, human rights are extremely violated. North Korean citizens usually cannot freely travel around the country or travel abroad. Emigration and immigration are strictly controlled, also ethnic minorities are not treated equally. All the media and press are controlled by dictator regime, the reason behind this is that government head or also commonly known as the Kim family, they want to maintain their power whatever the cost may be. The result of this violations is many North Korean ordinary people are trying very hard to flee the country. Canada has a very good reputation of respecting human rights. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees everyone has the fundamental freedoms such as freedom of conscience and religion, freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication etc. However, the study shows indigenous rights are not fully respected especially in poverty, housing, water, sanitation, healthcare, and education problems in indigenous communities, particularly those in remote and rural areas.(HRW world report 2017) The reason behind this violation is the government shrinking budget in infrastructure. There are many individuals and nongovernment organizations are promoting human rights all across the globe. Therefore, ordinary people like you and I can also help, for instance, we can volunteer to help those who needed, protest on the street to let the world hear our voices, and elect a government who respect human rights. After all the citizens are the real fighters in this war. Among all the human rights protectors, Human Rights Watch is doing an excellent job by meeting with governments, the United Nations, regional groups like the African Union and the European Union, financial institutions, and corporations to press for changes in policy and practice that promote human rights and justice around the world.(HRW introduction page) Human rights are very important no matter what social status you are or where are you from. In some countries like North Korea, human rights issues are very concerning also in our country Canada indigenous rights are not fully respected. However there are good things are happening, many organizations like Human Rights Watch are doing incredible jobs and promoting important values we all share. In conclusion, human rights violation may not be stopped forever but it is everyone’s duty to protect and promote human rights.
