The book Catching Fire authored by Suzanne Collins is the second book in the Hunger Games Trilogy. The book once again features Katniss Everdeen as the heroine. It opens with Katniss and Peeta Mallark, her co-victor in the 74th Annual Hunger Games, preparing to leave on the Victory Tour. The relationship between Katniss and Peeta has become very strained. They rarely interact with each other, but now they must begin the ruse of their romance in order to convince President Snow and the citizens of the Capital of their love. Sadly for Peeta, Katniss is blind of the love he actually does feel for her. While on the Victory Tour, she and Peeta along with Haymitch, a former Hunger Games victor from District 12, and Effie Trinkett, their handler from the Capital, they see the unrest of the citizens of the other districts. It becomes very clear to them that they must try to diffuse these rebellious emotions. To help with this, Katniss and Peeta announce that they will be getting married. Not only is this important for calming the districts’ upheaval, but also to protect the lives of the people she loved: her sister Primrose, her mother, and Gale, her lifelong best friend.¬†Unfortunately, Katniss and Peeta’s efforts are not enough to convince President Snow. He announces that the tributes of the third quarter quell, the 75th Annual Hunger Games, would be one male and one female chosen from the former victors of the previous Games. This is devastating to Katniss, Peeta, and their family and friends. This brings Katniss and Peeta closer together. They will be returning to the arena again together. None of the Tributes, who are chosen to participate, are happy with President Snow. They do not hide their feelings about how upset they are about this betrayal. To try to sway the decision of the President and the Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee, the Tributes tried to convince them to change their minds about the Victors being “contestants” during the interview with Caesar Flickerman. Katniss, being dressed by her stylist and confidante, Cinna, dresses her in her wedding dress that when she twirls in the dress transforms Katniss into the Mocking Jay, which is the symbol of the rebellion. With Peeta’s interview, fuel is added to the fire when he tells Caesar that he and Katniss have secretly married, and she is expecting a baby! It was not true, but it was a way to get the favor of the citizens of the Capitol on the Victors’ sides.¬†The Game is not cancelled and at the onset of it, Katniss witnesses Cinna being beaten to death. During the Game, alliances form, and unknown to Katniss, there is a plan to start the rebellion with Katniss being the Mocking Jay. Also included in this conspiracy are Plutarch Heavensbee, Haymitch, and other tributes. As the Game ended with the extraction of Katniss, Finnick, and Beetee, Peeta and Johanna is captured by the Capitol and District 12 is destroyed. Katniss and the others are taken to District 13, which was believed to have been destroyed by the Capitol. It actually existed underground. Haymitch and Plutarch tell her of the plan to rescue her so that she can become the Mocking Jay, the symbol of the revolution. But she became livid when she found out that Peeta had been taken. She then finds out that Primrose, their mother and Gale are alive and that District 12 was destroyed.¬†
